Important Notes:

  • In the game, all monsters that have more than one square in their info page are meant to see all along that row or column. However, because the grid in the info page is only 5×5, it may appear as though their range is limited to just two squares. See the picture below.

About the Game:

Monstropolis: Winter Crises is a story-rich puzzle strategy game where you play as the Mayor of Monstropolis, the city of eternal summer, where a monster can truly be a monster. But suddenly, a blizzard starts howling through the city, a city that has never known winter. Now, you must evacuate all monsters to shelters. Between monsters fighting each other and others trying to sabotage the evacuation, will you be able to defend your city from the howling blizzard?

How to Play:

Note: There is a designated interactive tutorial in the game.

Goal:

Your goal is to evacuate all the required monsters before the blizzard arrives, and with minimal casualties.

Rules:

Winning Condition:

To successfully evacuate the monsters (and win the level), you must transfer the required number of monsters shown on the shelter stats bar.

Losing Conditions:

  1. If you fail to evacuate all the required monsters before the blizzard arrives.
  2. If the number of casualties exceeds the maximum number allowed.
  3. If the total number of a monster race inside and outside the shelter combined becomes lower than the required number for evacuation, meaning that monster race has gone extinct.

Controls:

  • To select a monster: left-click it.
  • To deselect a monster: right-click anywhere, left-click on an empty space, or move the cursor away from it.
  • To drag a monster: hold right-click on it.

Game Submission:

Game Theme:

Theme Interpretation:

1. Core Mechanic:

The core mechanic in Monstropolis: Winter Crises is transferring monsters into shelters while preventing them from attacking each other by studying their connections and relationships with one another. Every monster has a list of enemies that should not be placed within its line of sight, or else monsters will be monsters… and they will fight. In this way, the theme of “Connections” is represented through the relationships between monsters.

2. Combat System:

After transferring a monster into a shelter, all monsters inside scout for enemies. Any exposed monster will be attacked, and any monster exposed by that attack can be attacked as well, potentially triggering chain attacks. In this way, the theme of “Connections” is represented through chains of connected attacks and reactions.

Far too much setup, gameplay should be in the first 30s, and I clicked through all the dialoge.

Too much story.

Thank you so much for trying out the game. I agree with you that, in a game jam, gameplay should ideally start within the first 30 seconds. However, regarding the story, I intentionally wanted it to be more narrative-rich. I also added multiple ways for players to move through it quickly:

1- You can fast-forward all dialogue, except during tutorials.
2- Every important piece of text that might affect gameplay is highlighted in red.
3- You can skip any dialogue, except tutorial dialogue.

Thank you again for the feedback!
